Moray & Brera...overwhelmed specators....L.Marvin 2003

The 53rd Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance treated it's many fans in attendance to presence of two of ITALDESIGN's most recent masterpieces. Alfa Romero "Brera" and Corvette "Moray". Both being striking achievements of the Giugiaro's automotive design artistry. The reason for this additional treat being the final celebration of ITAL's 35th anniversary.

Also at this celebration were many of Giugiaro's legendary automotive icons of design. In addition to the Moray and Brera, were the Nazca BMW and also the Audi Aztec prototypes. One of our favorites was the truly timless Bertone Ferrari.

Giugiaro's Bertone Ferrari

We wanted to take time to focus on the Moray and Brera as most people anywhere in the world will never get the chance to get close to these two examples of design excellence. So here is the next best thing to a first hand encouter for every angle possible.

The Moray and Brera are a different as night and day. The Moray was located on the main exhibit lawn with all of the other Giugiaro display cars. The Alfa Romero Brera, was located on the upper putting green abouv the lodge. You can see clearly in this first photo of the Moray, like all Giugiaro design, they have a phyiscal effect on everyone who lays eyes on them.

Corvette as only Giugiaro can do it........L.Marvin 2003

The Corvette Moray was a tribute to the Corvette's 50th anniversary and reflects the potential of the Corvette. Yet the Moray will never see production. However it does show the magic that Fabrizio Giugiaro can work on the existing Corvette platform. The Moray took only a few months to create! The great thing about the Moray is that is still carries all the flavor of the Corvette style theme, but at a higher level.

Needless to say the striking highlight of the Moray is how Fabrizio reached back to the most memorable design feature of any Corvette. The "split" rear window of the 1963 model, then reinvented the concept for the new century. It give the car a winged presence & only 3 windows! Still keeping the standard door entry method....brilliant. Again that originality of concept the signature of any Giugiaro inspriation.

The Alfa Romeo Brera has earned design award as the best design concept for 2002. The Brera project was also a major factor in Italdesign being awarded a new expansive contract by Alfa Romero for a series of cars. Including the Brera. The Brera is a 4WD platfrom with 400+HP!!  Imagine a Brera racing up Hwy 1. It's almost to much to hope for. As we all know Alfa is coming back to the USA. The Brera would be a smash hit. The Brera is almost so striking in it's elegance that any primary color over powers your senses.

Black & White show the strength of the use of concept...L.Marvin 2003

Many people may find that to be a strech, it really is not when you see how powerful and focused every angle is to deliver a complete powerful statement. Even in the above B/W photo you can see how much strength of line, effective use of light the form exhibits. Grabbing the reflected light and flowing the length of the body, then very fine edges to blend all of these into a essence that echos many of Alfa Romeros most memorable. If you can't feel the breeze from the Mille Miglia, or warmth of Alfa's "Satin's Breath" racer then your already dead. But for those of us still living, we now have one more reason to look to the future of each new day.

Lines that evoke the Alfa tradition........L.Marvin 2003

The profile of this design is again a signature of the heritage of the house of Giugiaro. Fabrizio has been head of style at Italdesign for several years. The Alfa Brera is another confirmation of his talent. We also see themes that come from as diverse a direction as the Bertone Ferrari. As with all Giugiaro designs they carry the ability to have a completeness when viewed from any angle. As seen in the profile and rear view photos. The photos really do not do justice to the impact of the phyiscal presence of the Alfa or Moray.

Striking use of perspective............L.Marvin 2003

The Alfa created such emotional reactions from viewers, that anyone seeing the car could not either praising it, or asking where can I buy one? When will it be in the USA? Also the famous, Ive never seen an Alfa that looked like that!

Luxury that is pure performance.........L.Marvin 2003

A historic flavor to the interior..........L.Marvin 2003

Now another design feature that gives the Alfa a special personality, is of course those wing style doors. Allowing excellent access to the backseat. Yes a back seat, and bigger than you would expect. The interior is able to accomidate everyone from the tallest in our staff at 6'3" to our shortest 4'11" (racer X).

Over powering beauty and still pure Alfa.....L.Marvin 2003

Yes the Alfa Brera project has created the same reaction anywhere in the world it has been show from Geneva to Bologna and Detroit. We expect to hear more about additional Alfa Romero projects and we will also make sure that our readers get a up close and personal as possible. As soon as possible. We also want to thank our good friends at Italdesing and in particular Fabrizio Giugiaro for moving the cars after the show so we could have few moments to shoot these additional photos. Also to Franco Bay and Ablerto Fumagailli for trying to fight off the spectators unable to restrain themselves while we were shooting.
